Margit Avelane
Painter and photographer. She makes pictures of places twice: once with a lens, and again with a brush.

Two practices, one table
Margit studied printmaking and photography side by side, and for years kept them apart. Photographs paid the rent. Paintings filled the weekends.
That changed one wet afternoon, when a darkroom print curled on her painting table and picked up a streak of ochre. She kept it. Every piece since has started the same way.

Inside the studio
The studio is a converted workshop with tall north windows. Prints dry on a line above the easels, and finished canvases lean three deep against the wall.
She works on four or five pieces at once, moving between them as each layer of paint sets.
